The early months of Spring were full of roadway patch cuts and sealing along the stretch of William Penn Highway between Churchill and Monroeville. The project's General Contractor, Golden Triangle Construction, had been tasked with rehabilitating this stretch of US-22 and Matcon Diamond's Vertical Trades division was called in for the isolated bridge deck demolition of the overpass leading to the Monroeville Mall and Convention Center campus'.
A combination of equipment was needed to complete the job so Matcon's in-house fabrication team first got to work assembling a custom bracket attachment for the excavator designed to fit securely over the parapet wall. Mounted to this bracket was the wall saw fitted with a 32 inch blade.
Normally, the wall saw track must be secured to the concrete substrate with two mounting bolts. This timely step is necessary in normal conditions but with some downward force from the excavator, the custom bracket and track-mounted wall saw were quickly situated on the parapet and safely secured for each cut.
With no repetitive setup of the wall saw required, our demo team worked up and down the overpass making cuts to the parapet walls every 12 feet as traffic continued below. Also on the demo team was our flat saw operator making 24 inch deep start-of-work cuts at either entrance to the overpass as well as a transverse cut connecting each of the opposing parapet wall saw cuts.
Once the wall saw team completed the parapet cuts our flat saw operator stayed behind to make longitudinal cuts along the deck to segment off 12x6 foot areas to be removed and trucked off-site. Matcon pulls through once again with no worksite injuries and a deck-free overpass ready for this job's General Contractor to continue their rehabilitation services.
